AI search answers

Why is AI recommending my competitor instead of me?

Short answer: A generative engine names your competitor for one of four reasons: it cannot crawl your site, your pages contain no extractable answer to the question being asked, your claims carry no sources it can verify, or the rest of the web talks about them and not you. All four are fixable, and the first two are usually fixed in days.

Reason 1: you are not retrievable

Check robots.txt for the AI agents specifically, not just Googlebot. Check that your key pages render their content server-side rather than only after JavaScript runs. A page the retrieval step never sees cannot lose on merit — it never entered the contest.

Reason 2: your competitor answers the question and you describe yourself

Most business sites are written as brochures: who we are, what we value, why choose us. Generative engines are answering questions. If your competitor has a page whose heading is the exact question and whose first paragraph is the exact answer, they win that prompt even with a weaker brand.

Reason 3: their claims are verifiable and yours are adjectives

The KDD 2024 GEO study found Statistics Addition to be the single strongest optimization tested, producing a 41% increase in position-adjusted word count in generated answers. Numbers with sources get quoted. “Industry-leading” does not.

Reason 4: the off-site web is on their side

Search the communities in your category for your name and your competitor’s. If they appear in real threads and you appear only on your own domain, the model is reading a consensus that excludes you. Building that corroboration — legitimately, in the native voice of each community — is a core part of GEO work.

How to find out which one it is

Fix a list of twenty buying-intent questions, ask all six major engines the same list, and record who gets named on each. The pattern tells you whether the problem is access, structure, evidence or off-site authority. MyFast.ai runs this scan monthly across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI with 100+ queries.

Does a bigger brand always win the AI recommendation?
No. The KDD 2024 study found the largest visibility gains went to pages that started lower in the rankings — over 115% for pages in fifth position that added citations.
Can I get a competitor removed from an AI answer?
No, and you should not try. The only durable move is becoming the more citable source on the questions that matter.
