Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
The practice of shaping a brand's content and its footprint across the web so that generative AI assistants name and recommend that brand when they write an answer. Unlike SEO, the goal is not a ranked link — it is being the business the model mentions.
GEO treats the generated answer, not the results page, as the destination. When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini to recommend a provider, the model writes a short answer and usually names only one or two businesses. GEO is the work that makes yours one of them.
In practice that means three things at once: publishing content a model can extract a clean answer from, backing every claim with named sources and hard numbers so the passage is safe to quote, and making sure the rest of the web corroborates what your own site says. The KDD 2024 GEO study by Aggarwal et al. found that adding statistics, citations and expert quotations raised a page’s visibility inside generated answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing performed about 10% worse than making no changes at all.
GEO does not replace SEO or AEO — it sits on top of them. A page a crawler cannot reach cannot be cited, and a page with no extractable answer gives the model nothing to lift.

- Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)Optimizing a page to be the single extracted answer a search engine shows or reads aloud — featured snippets, People Also Ask entries, voice assistant replies. AEO is about owning the snippet; GEO is about being named inside a generated answer.
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)The long-standing practice of improving a site so it ranks higher in a list of search results. It remains the technical floor GEO is built on: a page a model cannot crawl or read cannot be cited.
- LLM citationA mention of a source, brand or URL inside an AI-generated answer. Citations are the visibility currency of generative search: if the model does not cite you, the user never learns you exist.
- Generative engineAn AI system that answers a question by writing new text rather than returning a list of links — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI are the six we optimize for.
